Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, sets forth requirements regarding the privacy of student records. FERPA protects students' rights to inspect and review their education records, to request to amend their educational records, and to limit disclosure of personally identifiable information contained in education records.  All currently enrolled and former SBCC students, regardless of age, are protected under FERPA.

Are parents/guardians/family members allowed access to a student's educational records?
When a student reaches the age of 18 or begins attending a post secondary institution, regardless of age, FERPA rights transfer from the parent to the student. Parents may only obtain non-directory information if the student has submitted an Authorization for Release of Information to Parents to Admissions & Records. Photo ID will be required.
